In a race that has been a major victory for Second Amendment advocates, Democrat State Senator Joe Baca handily defeated Republican businessman Elia Pirozzi in the runoff election to replace the late Congressman George Brown, Jr.(D) in California's 42nd District. Both candidates are ardent supporters of our constitutionally protected Right to Keep and Bear Arms.
Brown's passing, and Baca's victory represents a two vote switch in House of Representatives where the gun control issue seems to come up each time the President is facing another scandal or after every tragedy involving a firearm.
Baca's September 21st primary election defeat of Brown's widow, Marta Macias Brown, clearly demonstrated that gun control supporters can expect to come out on the losing end of elections when gun control is the main issue. Marta Brown, reportedly, attacked Baca with more than two dozen anti-gun mailers and out spent him by more that double. She repeatedly accused him of being too closely aligned with the National Rifle Association (NRA). The voters obviously did not see a problem with that.
Considering, that in 1999, Californians have suffered the worst onslaught of attacks on their Second Amendment rights, it has become obvious that they will carry their anger to the polls. Election year 2000 does not look good for the anti-gunners in California.
