CAL-ERT 04/02/02 3:30 P. M.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

TODAY'S LEGISLATIVE ACTION

AB1960 (Briggs) Would allow handgun manufacturers to pay a one-time fee for the listing of handguns, on the California Department of Justice "approved" listing, that have passed the state required safety tests.  This bill would allow firearms to remain on the list on a permanent basis after the fee is paid.  PASSED OUT OF THE ASSEMBLY PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE.

Please contact the following Assembly Members and thank them for their vote to support this bill: Keeley, Washington, Dickerson, LaSuer.  Their contact information can be found at: http://www.nramemberscouncils.com/legs/asmpubsafety.shtml

>>>>>>>>>>>>

SB1490 (Perata) Would have given local officials, such as district attorneys, city attorneys, etc. access to California Dealer Record of Sale (DROS) information.  The access to the DROS database should be limited to law enforcement agencies.

This bill has been amended to protect the privacy concerns of firearms owners.  We will watch this bill very carefully.  PASSED THE SENATE PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE.

>>>>>>>>>>>>

AB2580 (Simitian) Would require annual inspections by the DOJ of anyone permitted for dangerous devices (machine guns, silencers) for "safe storage" capabilities. In addition, such inspections would be required for registered assault weapon permittees. For those who are permitted for less than 5 items, then the inspections would be carried out every 5 years.

As predicted by NRA-ILA State Liaison, Ed Worley, this bill has been amended to apply ONLY to licensed commercial dealers and licensed firearms manufacturers.  PASSED OUT OF THE ASSEMBLY PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE.

>>>>>>>>>>>>

AB2222 (Koretz) Would ban the possession of many hunting/sporting/competition firearms - including .50 caliber BMG.  It would also ban many currently available ammunition cartridges.

As we announced nearly a week ago, AB2222 was withdrawn from committee by the author and was NOT HEARD IN THE ASSEMBLY PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE TODAY.  It is currently scheduled to be heard on April 16, 2002, but that also might change.  AB2222 is being amended and we are watching it very closely.

More to come, as information is verified.
