CAL-ERT 05/04/03 -- Noon
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
IMPORTANT LEGISLATIVE ACTIVITY

This information is accurate at the time this CAL-ERT was written and originally distributed. The scheduled times and dates for hearings are subject to change, by the legislature, with little or no advance notice. The NRA Members' Councils of California will keep you informed as the legislative situation changes in Sacramento.

SUBJECT: SB489 They must think that we are not watching them.

We defeated SB 190, BUT it has arisen with a NEW BILL NUMBER, SB489!

SB 190 was a Semi-Auto Handgun Bill - it would have required that all semiautomatic handguns, manufactured after a specific date - that are imported and sold in California, be equipped with a loaded chamber indicator and a magazine disconnect mechanism.

We defeated SB 190 HANDS DOWN! Due to the tremendous volume of calls, emails, letters and faxes, many legislators refused to accept SB 190 as written, and Jack Scott refused to amend SB 190. That stalemate spelled defeat for SB190!

BUT JACK SCOTT'S SKULLDUGGERY RUNS DEEP! He has gutted ANOTHER bill, SB 489
(one that had absolutely NOTHING to do with guns), and replaced it with a modified version of SB 190's original content. Jack Scott is attempting to pass SIMILAR LANGUAGE UNDER A DIFFERENT BILL NUMBER!

We must make special effort to let the legislators know WE ARE WISE TO THIS TRICK! (They did the same thing with other legislation during previous sessions and they think that they can get away with it with this bill).

Now, more than ever, it is important to contact them AGAIN and let them know that changing bill numbers changes NOTHING!

PLEASE PASS THE WORD ABOUT THIS TRICKERY!
