M. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ IMPORTANT LEGISLATIVE ACTIVITY SCA12 (Perata) - This bill would create a "Sales and use tax" of 5 cents per cartridge or component sold in California. This bill is currently scheduled to be heard in the Senate Health and Human Services Committee on Wednesday, June 5, 2002 at 1:30 P. M. PLEASE CALL (916) 445-5965 and voice your opposition to SCA12. For more information, go to: http://www.NRAMembersCouncils.com AB1960 (Briggs) Would allow for a one-time Department of Justice listing and fee payment for handguns that are required to be tested under SB15. This would replace the current system whereby manufactures are required to pay an annual fee to keep their products on the "approved" list. AB1960 passed out of the Assembly with a bipartisan vote of 62-0. SB682 & AB496 These bills seek to repeal part of the Civil Code 1714 that deals with product liability. These bills were redrafted and gutted/amended from bills that were initially introduced to do other things. These bills were changed after the anti-gun advocates lost their "101 California Street lawsuit" against the firearms industry in the California State Supreme Court. The repeal of current law would only open the door of litigation to the manufacturers of lawful and legal consumer products. Manufacturers of lawful products should not be held responsible for the actions of criminals or any person who uses the product in a negligent manner. It is important that everyone call the legislature ASAP. These bills could be voted on at any time. SB682 is in the State Assembly. AB496 is in the State Senate. ACTION REQUESTED: Please contact the following Assembly Members and THANK THEM for voting for YES on AB1960 and ask them to OPPOSE SB682. Joe
